TWENTY-ONE

Surla peeked through the kitchen window, and watched Jax do a series of push-ups on the cracked patio. It was a bright morning, with a family of birds nested in the corner of the patio cover’s wooden crossbeams. Her attention wasn’t on the feathery fowls, however; it was on the muscles on the backs of Jax’s arms that bulged out with every push. She let out a dreamy sigh.

“Why don’t you go talk to him?” Idis said, bringing some cereal bowls to the sink beside her.

“Hm?” Surla glanced to the witch, and then again fixed her eyes on her crush.

“Talk to him. He’s supposed to be your husband and all, right?”

“He doesn’t know that…,” she said with a heavy exhalation.

Idis came closer and leaned against the rust-colored counter with a knobby elbow. “Look, Surla, he’s been here for a week. He’ll be here for another month. Every morning, at eight-thirty on the dot, he goes out there to do his exercise routine. And every morning at eight-thirty one on the dot, you watch him through the curtain. Just go join him for a change. I’ve seen the way he looks at you, when you pass in the hall, when we’re at the dinner table, when you two play your card games at night, after he practices his magic and whatnot with his grandfather.”

Surla’s heart thudded in delight, and she turned her full attention to Idis, who for once reminded her of an honest-to-goodness caring mother of all things. Her pale green eyes very sympathetic. And there was no sarcasm in her tone. “You see how he looks at me?” Surla repeated.

“Yeah, boy has got the hots for you.” A wry smile appeared.

Surla modestly stroked her blushing cheek. “Idis, he’s seeing someone—Tiffany Connor, the mayor’s daughter. He’s conflicted, and I don’t want to force myself on him. I’ve seen the way his parents are proud of him for dating her. And though he’s here, I know he still connects with her through his phone. It’s complicated for him.”

Idis pulled her springy red hair back into a ponytail, and then tightened her apron’s bow in thought. She turned on the sink, and let it bubble up over breakfast’s dirty dishes. Surla was about to resume her little activity of spying on Jax, when Idis added, “All I know is if Hermie was dating someone else, but was holed up with me for a month at my house, I would be working my charms on him.”

Surla couldn’t help but smile at that. “You have a point. I just want things to happen naturally for him, you know. I want him to, like, rediscover his love for me.”

“He’s not going to do any rediscovering with you in here and him out there…” She scrubbed a glass, and put it in a rack.

“You have a point.”

“Of course I do. Now go out there.”

“Yes, Mommy,” Surla teased.

Idis flicked a wet hand at her. “Don’t ever say that again. I couldn’t ever handle kids.”

“Not even me?” Surla tilted her head innocently and batted her eye lashes.
